Raleigh City Council approved an ordinance allowing the trucks with a 6-2 vote Tuesday. John Odom and Thomas Crowder voted against the change.
The trucks will only be allowed to operate on private property and owners must purchase permits. They also can't operate within 150 feet of a restaurant.
Also under the new policy, food trucks will be allowed to operate from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily. However food trucks that are located within 150 feet of the property line of a single-family home or a duplex will be limited to operating from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Council members said they would revisit the issue in 6 months to see how it's going.
Restaurant owners resisted the food trucks, saying they pay rent and property taxes and shouldn't have to compete with vendors who don't have that high overhead.
