Spring Lake lifts boil advisory on drinking water

SPRING LAKE, NC

Spring Lake Town Manager Tommy Burns announced in an email Sunday that the boil-water notice in effect since late Friday evening is being lifted. He says the water is safe to use without boiling in Spring Lake, which is just outside the Army's Fort Bragg.

Burns says seven systemwide water samples came back negative.

About 50 restaurants were closed Friday after the town's water tested positive for E. coli and fecal coliform. The bacteria are present in human and animal feces.

Spring Lake's 6,600 residents were urged to boil tap water for one minute before drinking, cooking or brushing teeth.
