Elections officials finished counting provisional ballots and additional absentee ballots Monday, and incumbent Kevin Hill is 48 votes shy of 50 percent plus one majority he needs to avoid a runoff with challenger Heather Losurdo.
In the latest unofficial results, Hill has 8116 votes to Losurdo's 6514. The results are scheduled to be certified by the Board of Elections Tuesday morning. Losurdo has said she will ask for a runoff if Hill didn't reach the 50 percent majority.
The future political direction of the school board hinges on the race. Hill, a Democrat, could tilt the board in favor of the Democrats if he wins reelection as current board chairman Ron Margiotta, a Republican, was defeated in last week's elections.
