It happened after 6 p.m. near mile marker 97.
Witnesses said 72 year-old Arnold Newsome was hit by a van in the northbound lanes and ended up in the median near the southbound lanes.
Newsome was hit by a van driven by Jesus Hernandez, of Bailey. Hernandez stopped at the scene and will not face any charges.
Officials are not sure why Newsome was on the interstate. He lived not very far from the accident scene.
One southbound lane was closed for about an hour.
