First Alert Overnight Forecast: July 4
Heat returns tomorrow

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Raleigh 4th of July Fireworks returned to Dix Park for a third consecutive year and had quite a bit of weather to contend with.

The gates opened on time after heat in the afternoon tied the record for hottest July 4 ever recorded. Temperatures reached 101 degrees, which tied the record set in 2012.

But the weather was not finished acting up.

Shortly after 9 p.m., a rain storm pushed through downtown Raleigh. The rain caused a bit of confusion.

Raleigh announced at Dix Park that the area needed to be evacuated and that the fireworks would be postponed until Friday.

However, as people evacuated the park the fireworks started shooting off. The fireworks show that happened was much shorter than the originally planned show and many attendees didn't get to properly watch it because they had evacuated the area.

Friday's weather

Friday will be a First Alert Day in the Triangle. A heat advisory was issued for the entire viewing area from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feels like temperatures are expected to reach between 104-111 degrees.
