Missing money under investigation at Leesville MS

RALEIGH

Officials still aren't sure how much money may have been improperly spent at Leesville Road Middle School during the 2006-07 school years. A spokesperson says an internal audit is underway and Raleigh Police have been notified.

Wake Schools spokesperson, Michael Evans says these new measures were put in place after a multi-million dollar transportation scandal helped uncover problems.

"We're trying to make it harder to defraud the taxpayers out of money as well as put systems in place to detect it earlier. So one of the things we're trying to do now is figure out how was this person able to develop a scheme, to prevent it from happening in the future," Evans said.

Their investigation is focusing on staff members responsible for bookkeeping at the time and should be wrapped up in a month or two.

In the meantime, the school system has given Leesville extra money to make sure no programs suffer.
