Man hospitalized after police shooting

Officers were dispatched around 3 p.m.Wednesday about a suicidal man on West Chapel Hill Street.

When officers arrived, they encounted a man who placed a shotgun under his chin and refused to drop the gun. The man went inside the apartment and would not come out.

The Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Team and Seletective Enforcement Team were called to the scene.

The man came out of the apartment around 3:40 p.m. and pointed a gun at officers, according to a preliminary investigation.

An officer fired one shot, striking the man in the chest. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Durham Police Department's Professional Standards Division have been called in to investigate, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
