Dunn's parents were already at the hospital when they got the call that he had been shot.
Family members say 14-year-old Damien Dunn was a good kid, never in trouble and always willing to help around his Walnut Terrace neighborhood. So, when he was shot just after 7pm Friday night the news spread quickly.
David Dunn, Damien's father explained to us, "When I got the phone call it was saying he had got shot in the head."
David Dunn was already at Wakemed with his wife a diabetic who had just undergone a leg amputation when he learned his son had been shot.
David continued, "I heard the ambulance coming down New Bern Avenue and I heard the sirens, my son was dead before he even left the house.
Dunn doesn't have the heart to tell his wife what has happened as she recovers from surgery. So for now, he is keeping it from her.
He stated, "It would kill her if I tell her her oldest son is dead."
As police continued their investigation Saturday morning, they issued a warrant and started searching for 18-year-old Fruikwan Stewart in connection with the shooting.
Eyewitnesses say Damien was at a neighbors when an argument broke out with some adults. They believe the teen was caught in the middle.
Damien was inside one of the houses right up the street from where he lived when he was shot. The neighbors say he was a 7th grader that was a role model to his peers.
Police charged 18-year-old Eboni Mitchell of Garner with accessory after the fact. Investigators believe she helped Stewart escape from police.
Mitchell is being held in the Wake County jail.
