Raleigh wants right to ban park smoking

RALEIGH However, the city isn't sure it wants to actually snuff out lighting up.

By state law, cities don't have the ability to legislate tobacco use in parks.

Thursday the city council voted to encourage the legislature to amend the law and give that authority to municipalities.

One council member says she expects the NC General Assembly to review the bill when it reconvenes.

The council did not say it wants to ban smoking, but it wants the power to make that choice in the future.
