It happened just before 5 a.m. at Donald Ross and Poole roads.
According to Captain Chris Bertram, the officer was responding to a foot chase in progress on Maple Street.
The officer, whose identity has not been released, was taken to WakeMed and is expected to be okay. He remains hospitalized, but the details of his injuries are not known.
The crash caused a power line to fall and block Poole Road. Progress Energy worked to clear the line before morning rush hour traffic.
