Fifty-one-year-old David Buck, of Urbana, Illinois, was walking along Hillandale Road, with his back to traffic, when authorities said he was hit by Jeanette Brunson.
Brunson, 54, was headed southeast on Hillandale Road near Synnotts Place, when she struck Buck with the right, front-end of her 2003 Explorer.
The accident happened at 7:45 a.m.
Buck was taken to Duke University Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
Police say no charges are expected at this time, and the case remains under investigation.
