The Halifax County Sheriff's Office said they received a report about the sexual assault early Wednesday morning.
Authorities said the victim claimed she was walking down a street in the Roanoke Rapids area when a man pushed her into a vacant residence and then sexually assaulted her.
Afterwards, the woman said she fled the scene and reported the incident.
Detectives later arrested 48-year-old Mathy Ray Hardy Thursday in connection with the assault.
Hardy was charged with second degree rape and assault on a female. He has been placed into the Halifax County Jail under a $90,000 bond.
