Police: UNC student killed in fall

CARRBORO, N.C.

Officials with the Carrboro Police Department said Monday that David Palmer Shannon climbed on some machinery at the Ready Mixed Concrete Plant on Guthrie Avenue in Carrboro over the weekend before falling 17 feet and landing on a concrete surface.

Witnesses told police that Shannon was seen drinking that night and into the morning hours of Saturday, leading them to believe alcohol impairment was a factor in his death. Police said they do not suspect foul play was involved.

A memorial vigil for Shannon was held Monday night inside the Student Union on UNC's campus.

"... Our thoughts are with his parents, family and friends," UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp said in a message to students and faculty over the weekend.

According to Shannon's Facebook page information, he was 18 years old and a 2012 graduate of Myers Park High School in Charlotte.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Shannon's whereabouts or activities on Friday to call Lt. Westbrook at (919) 918-7417.
