Camera installed along Tobacco Trail

DURHAM

Durham officials have now installed a security camera along the American Tobacco Trail.

The move comes after a surge in attacks on the trail over the last year.

"I think that is a fantastic idea," said jogger Lauren Porter. "Because of recent events, I haven't been out here as much later, especially with it getting darker."

As part of its ongoing efforts to make the trail safer, the city is testing out the camera near the trail entrance near Blackwell Street.

City workers installed the test camera, but taxpayers aren't footing the bill. ABC11 was told a private donor is paying for it.

In addition to officers on ATVs, bike patrols and other safety measures, the single test camera could be up and running as early as next week.
