Coyote sightings in Durham

DURHAM

The areas include north Durham at Guess Road and St. Albans Court, where a witness reported they saw the animal walking down the street despite passing traffic.

There've been other sightings not far from downtown at Mangum Street and Markham Avenue.

A resident there told ABC11 she hasn't seen a coyote, but recently locked eyes with a fox.

"I'm fairly certain it wasn't a coyote because it was too close to the ground," explained Fran Wilson.

Wildlife officials say that generally coyotes don't attack humans, so there's no cause for alarm unless the animal is rabid.

Otherwise, avoid conflict with coyotes or foxes by keeping outdoor pets out of harm's way.

"Don't freak out. Stay inside. Don't go towards the wild creature," offered Wilson.
