SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Police in Smithfield said counterfeit money was used at three separate businesses this week.
Fake $50 bills were used in transactions at a Golden Corral, a Waffle House, and a Timberland Outlet.
It is not yet known if the incidents are connected, but police have not ruled out the possibility.
Police said the six $50 bills passed out had two serial numbers: JL52925743A and ME11676964A.
This isn't the first time Smithfield police investigated the use of counterfeit money in Johnston County. Earlier this month, a woman discovered money given to her for her furniture on CraigsList was fake. That time, the buyer used $10 bills.
Police said businesses and consumers should be on the lookout for suspicious looking currency.
