FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Firefighters were called to an apartment fire off Skibo Road in Fayetteville Wednesday morning.

The blaze broke out before 9 a.m. at the Chason Ridge Apartment Complex at 5836 Chason Ridge Dr., behind the Target and Home Depot stores.

When crews arrived, flames and heavy smoke were seen billowing out of one of the units in the two-story building.

No one was inside the apartment, but several pets were rescued from the complex.

The unit where the fire originated was badly damaged, and several other units suffered water damage.

The fire was determined to be accidental. Officials said the fire started on the balcony of one unit and extended to the attic.

The exact cause that sparked the blaze remains undetermined.
