HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Summer is officially here and for many families that means more time in the water. Whether swimming in a pool, lake, river, or beach, this season also leads to an increase in water-related injuries and drowning incidents.
USA Swimming offers a nationwide program called 'Make A Splash' to provide free or reduced cost swim lessons.
In the Triangle, there are indoor pools in Cary, Raleigh, and Hillsborough that offer the lessons through the partnership with USA Swimming.
At the Orange County Sportsplex, the Make A Splash program includes a full session of lessons.
"All we ask is for you to bring in a copy of your free and reduced lunch form from your school and you can get that at the front office of any school, and, if you qualify for free lunch, you'll get free lessons, explained Orange Co. Sportsplex Aquatics Manager, Matthew Reedy. "If you qualify for reduced lunch, you'll get reduced lessons. We'll match that percentage for swim lessons as well."
According to the CDC, there are about ten deaths daily from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States.
