The former principal at Freedom Christian Academy in Fayetteville faces felony charges of violating the North Carolina Sex Offender Registration Act.

Joan Ellen Dayton surrendered to authorities Monday.

Deputies began investigating after a complaint that Paul Connor - the husband of a teacher - was allowed to work at the school.

Connor is also charged with one count of conspiracy. North Carolina law says registered sex offenders are not allowed to work in schools.

Dayton announced earlier this year that she had taken a voluntary leave of absence from the school.
