Additional school makeup days announced in Wake and Durham
Wake County parents were relieved when they got the news that all of the missed days of school last week won't cut into their spring break vacations.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Wake County parents were relieved when they got the news - that at least for now -- all of the missed days of school last week won't cut into their spring break vacations next month.

Jill Russell and a group of parents were huddled up discussing the topic inside of the Garner Ice House hockey rink Monday evening. It's where their students were making up last Monday's missed practice for the Junior Hurricanes.

"Last week was long," Russell said laughing and describing her two Martin Middle Schoolers time off. "They loved it and every night constantly, 'Is school cancelled, is school cancelled, is school cancelled?'"

Russell's kids are on a traditional calendar, which the Wake County Schools District decided to keep in class the entire day on March 6 and April 17.

"For me it works out well because we have plans for spring break," she said.

Jim Leonard whose son is also on the hockey team attends Apex Middle, which is on a traditional calendar.

"The fact that they're extending days from what would have been a half day that's fine with us because he needs to go to school anyway," explained Leonard.

Wake Officials said if inclement weather forces any more snow days they would likely make them up from the week of spring break.

Like Russell, Leonard says his plans are locked, and adds that in his experience making the days up then won't be productive.

"Kids aren't there and the teachers will teach to half a class and it won't be very meaningful because then they're going to have to make it up anyway with other half of the class," said Leonard.

While Wake County and Durham Public Schools have already announced their make-up days, leaders with Chapel-Hill Carrboro City Schools are already looking toward the future. Tuesday morning, the school board plans to ask the superintendent to use Feb. 28 for a make-up day if school is cancelled Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday because of the winter weather currently forecast for later this week.
