Troopers arrest suspect in Durham store clerk murder
BUTNER (WTVD) -- A State Trooper is being credited with identifying and arresting a suspect wanted for the fatal shooting of convenience store clerk in Durham on April 27.
Officials say while on patrol around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, the trooper pulled over a Ford vehicle after it ran a stop light in Butner. The car, which was reported stolen out of Greensboro, slowed at first but then sped off.
After a short chase, officials say the vehicle crashed at the intersection on Veasay Road and Old Oxford Highway and the driver fled on foot.
Law enforcement began an extensive search but it was eventually called off. Two troopers remained in the area for a short time before heading back towards Durham.
That's when officials say the troopers saw the driver walking along Old Oxford Highway. He was arrested without further incident.
The driver originally provided a false name, but was later identified as Timothy Moore, 31, of 1214 Granby Street in Durham, according to troopers. He was wanted for the murder of 57-year-old Nafez Jalal.
Jalal was shot and killed in an attempted armed robbery at the Fast Food Mart in the 2100 block of Broad Street in Durham. Another victim was shot in the leg.
Moore was taken to the Granville County Detention Center where he made his first court appearance on Monday morning.
