ASHEBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- A North Carolina Highway Patrol officer has managed to find a lost and disoriented woman who's been missing since Christmas Day by using his extensive knowledge of state roads.

The Patrol said Trooper E.C. Underwood was on patrol Tuesday when he heard a radio call go out for the Randolph County woman.

Authorities had a cell phone number for her and had been trying to use it for days without success. Trooper Underwood tried one last time to call her and was shocked when she answered.

Being confused and disoriented, the woman couldn't say exactly where she was. All she could say was she had seen a sign with the number "1" on it.

Underwood was able to figure out the woman was on U.S. Highway 1 in Richmond County and through further conversation determined she'd just crossed into South Carolina.

He convinced her to turn around and head back into North Carolina. He then got her to stop at a Waffle House restaurant in Rockingham, where he asked her to hand the phone to a restaurant employee.

Underwood told the employee he would pay for food and drink and instructed the person to offer the woman a meal so she would stay there.

Underwood then rushed over and picked the woman up before driving her back to her grateful family. The woman's name and age was not released.
