Two Tar Heels players suspended
M.J. Stewart and Mike Hughes have been "benched" indefinitely.

CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- Two University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill football players won't see any action in Saturday's game against Wake Forest, because they've been "benched" indefinitely.

UNC says Sophomore Cornerback M.J. Stewart and Freshman Cornerback Mike Hughes violated team rules.

The suspension stems from an altercation the two players were involved in on Oct. 4th.

Head football coach Larry Fedora said the school has been working closely with university and Chapel Hill Police to gather information.

"We hold our players to a high standard and M.J. and Mike will face the consequences for their involvement," said Fedora in a statement.

UNC suspended both players indefinitely earlier Thursday.

Stewart later turned himself into police where he was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery.

He has since been released on $2,000 bond, and is expected to be back in court on Oct. 22.
