ABC11 Together highlights good deeds, community needs and how our viewers can help
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- ABC11 Together is following the road to recovery for a dog owner and his Sheltie named Tony.
The pair is still recovering after a car hit them earlier this month in Raleigh. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, the healing process is a little easier.
"I really think both my sons, Tony and Kunal, are here today because of the support and love from this community," said Dipeeka Chablani, the victim's mother.
Dipeeka rushed to her son's side after receiving news he and his dog Tony were hurt in an accident. Tony broke several bones and is now confined to a bed.
"He is in a lot of pain and he has a long road to recovery," Dipeeka said.
With the cost of Tony's surgery soaring into the thousands, ABC11 viewers stepped in to help after we aired Tony's story.
"Everyone who has seen it has cried, literally," Dipeeka said.
Francine Cronin spearheaded the effort online, raising more than $13,000 in less than a week. Dipeeka calls her a guardian angel.
"It just touches my heart so much and it just makes me think that human beings are just so good," Dipeeka said.
Doctors say it will be weeks until Tony can even begin to heal. For now, the family is taking one day at a time, finding comfort in the generosity of others.
"I just don't know what to say, it's just amazing," Dipeeka shared. "Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your support."
The extra money raised will go toward Tony's physical therapy.
