BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Part of Interstate 40 was shut down in both directions late Wednesday night after a serious crash.

It happened just before 10 p.m. in Johnston County on I-40 near mile marker 315 near Benson.

Three people were killed after a wrong way driver in a Toyota Tundra crashed into a Dodge Durango.

Upon collision the Durango spun out of control onto the concrete barrier where it caught on fire. The Tundra then rolled over the center median into the east bound lanes.

The two passengers inside of the Durango--a man and a pregnant woman--died in the crash. The driver of the Tundra, later identified as Nicholas Glenn McGee, 24, of Fuquay-Varina, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe McGee was intoxicated when the crash happened. A check of his record shows he was convicted of DWI in 2017.

Officials said the area where the crash happened is a construction zone, so there was no way for the driver to get out of the way of the wrong way driver.
