FRESNO, Calif. -- A 9-year-old from Los Banos, California is a new world record holder.

James Savage became the youngest person to swim from the San Francisco Aquatic Park to Alcatraz Island and back on Tuesday.

"I thought it was going to be easy at first but then I got out there and the tide was pushing me all around," he said. "I was about to quit but then I kept going."

Savage is a fourth grader at Mercey Springs Elementary on Los Banos.

He broke the record set by a 10-year-old from Sunnyvale.
