Petroleum fills retention pond

RALEIGH According to the City of Raleigh, oil leaked from a failed mechanical fitting on a fuel pump at the steam plant on NC State's main campus.

The City diverted the oil to a storage basin to protect the machinery at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant.

A hazardous materials team was called in to deal with the situation.

The Neuse River plant processes an average of 36.67 million gallons of sewage a day.

Officials said there was no threat to the public and none of the petroleum was released from the plant into the river.
