Firefighter dispatched to wife's accident

An emergency responder was horrified after being dispatched to the scene of an accident involving his wife.A Pender County volunteer firefighter was the first to respond to a hit-and-run accident.

Upon his arrival, he discovered the victim was his wife, 30-year-old Amy Suzanne Kornegay. She was dead.

Police say she was walking Monday afternoon when she was struck by a pickup truck that left the scene.

The driver of the truck, 71-year-old Amon Hall, eventually returned to scene and said he thought he had hit a deer.

Kornegay was a substitute teacher and the mother of two sons.

Hall is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to file a report. He is in jail under a $10,000 bond.
