Brown was found shot to death in October, 2007 at a small building that housed the mailboxes for his north Raleigh apartment complex.
The alleged link to a gang was made Thursday at a session of Wake County's quarterly Murder Status Hearings.
Latham's attorney asked that his client's trial, scheduled to begin Monday, be delayed because of the discovery of new evidence. Some of that new evidence was fingerprints said to belong to Latham. They were found at the entrance to the mailbox building. Latham did not live at the complex.
The judge agreed to give the defense additional funds to hire a ballistics expert to examine bullets collected at the scene, but he refused to delay the trial.
