Soldier was passenger in car that hit him

FAYETTEVILLE Around 2:51 a.m. Friday police received a call about a person being hit by a car on the All American Freeway. At the scene, officers discovered a man laying on the right side of the road near the Cliffdale Rd. exit.

The driver of the vehicle, a 39-year-old woman, was also on the scene when officers arrived. Police say she was driving the SUV that hit and killed the soldier. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined that 30-year-old Sergeant Jason Lightfoot was a passenger in the car and that he and the woman knew each other.

"A female driver of a vehicle actually hit a male who was previously a passenger in the vehicle," said Theresa Chance, police spokesperson. "We do know at this point that he is. He was a soldier assigned to Fort Bragg."

Police say at this time, it is not clear what happened, but they are questioning the woman and say she and Lightfoot had been arguing prior to the incident. A preliminary investigation indicates that the soldier was on the hood of the SUV just before he was hit.

Investigators say they are trying to determine if the woman hit the man intentionally or accidentally. Alcohol may have been a factor.
