Other candidates, Rosa Gill, Carol Delenko and Kim Luckes withdrew from the race. While Alexander Killens and Marlowe Foster were never formally nominated for the position.
The race came down to Bernard Allen Jr., Dan Blue, and J. Mills Holloway.
Malone passed away April 18 of natural causes.
He spent 40 years working on the Wake County School Board, Wake County Board of Commissioners and in the state Senate.
