A motorist told authorities it appeared as if the white Honda went off the road after entering a sharp right turn and then hit a tree. The car landed in Big Juniper Creek.
Jennifer Benson, 17, died in the wreck and was the only person in the car. She was a junior at Pinecrest High School.
Pincrest High School is still mourning the loss of assistant principal Abigail Baughn. Monday deputies charged her husband, 38-year-old Randy Baughn, with her murder.
According to the Southern Pines Pilot, a call was sent out to members of the Pinecrest community informing them of Benson's death.
The North Carolina High Patrol is investigating.
