At the Apple store in Durham at Streets at Southpoint, workers split a line of about 100 people into two groups - those with reservations, and those without.
People without reservations had to wait until 10am to get their iPads, assuming there was availability.
The new devices are also available at most Best Buy stores.
They are priced starting at $499.
