Crews were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. on Lane Street between Salisbury and McDowell Streets.
A hazardous materials response was also called in after reports of a natural gas smell in the walls of the old state records building.
Workers had tried to fix a similar leak in the same location earlier in the week by digging up the street.
So far there is no word on if this is the same leak or a different one.
