Investigators said for an unknown reason, 34-year-old Amelia Hernandez-Garcia stopped in the center westbound lane of the interstate and got out of her vehicle to request assistance from another motorist who had stopped just before 9 p.m.
Police said a chain reaction accident involving five vehicles ensued. The pileup included Hernandez-Garcia's vehicle and the car of the other driver who stopped.
Hernandez-Garcia was killed. Nine other people were taken to the hospital for treatment.
All lanes of I-40 Westbound were closed while emergency workers managed the scene.
No charges were filed.
