Raccoon causes city to lose power

ROCKY MOUNT The animal apparently got into the city's point of delivery station causing a one-hour blackout to most of the city Monday night.

According to the Rocky Mount Telegram, the raccoon climbed a fence into the station - which delivers all of the city's power - and went between two parts of the system, causing it to shut down.

The raccoon survived the encounter and was spotted climbing back over the fence and scurrying off into the woods.

Officials say there are animal guards to prevent interference, but say they can not completely prevent problems.

Power was restored to residents by midnight.
