Pictures from the scene showed the wreckage of the red tractor pinned under a tanker truck on Bragg Boulevard at Deerfield Dr. in Spring Lake.
The crash happened just before 10 a.m.
Family members identified the dead man as Robert "Cecil" Lucas. They told ABC11 that Lucas was 78 and legally blind. He used the tractor to get around because he didn't have a driver license.
There's a Kangaroo gas station at the scene of the accident, and family members speculated Lucas may have been attempting to cross the intersection to get gas.
A witness said Lucas had the green light when he was hit. The investigation continues.
Alexander Lucas said he had just spoken with his brother who was on his way to their parent's house on Highway 87 just north of Spring Lake.
"And he called me to let him in there, and so, that's where I was, on my way up there to let him in the house to get some sweet potatoes. So, this is as far as he got," said Alexander Lucas.
