Man arrested after alleged sexual assault

FAYETTEVILLE

Authorities arrested 32-year-old Latorie Jerriel Crumpler after a woman reported an alleged sexual assault.

It happened around 11 p.m. Sunday near Ramsey Street. The victim told authorities that Crumpler asked her for a ride and when she didn't respond, he displayed a handgun and got into her car.

They then drove to the dead-end of Brinkley Street, where the victim said she was sexually assaulted.

During the assault, the woman grabbed the gun and a struggle ensued. The gun went off and a bullet struck the suspect in the leg and the victim in the hand.

The woman said she then ran to call 911 and the suspect fired several shots at her, but she was not hit.

Detectives found Crumpler at his home on Abbotswood Drive with a gunshot wound to his leg.

He is charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape, assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill, larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is currently being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $140,000 secured bond.
