One killed in head-on crash in Lee County

SANFORD, N.C.

The State Highway Patrol said an SUV crashed head on with a tractor trailer on Swanns Station Road. The tractor trailer was hauling rock from a nearby quarry when troopers say the SUV crossed the center line and hit the rig head on.

The SUV slid under the cab and both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the SUV, a small Isuzu Trooper, died in the wreck. Monday afternoon, troopers said they were unable to determine the victim's gender, race, or age.

The driver of the tractor trailer received only bruises. He managed to crawl out the passenger side of the still flaming cab.

Traffic was detoured around Swann Station Road for about five hours while investigators went over the scene and the wreckage was hauled away.

One state trooper told ABC11 that it was the worst accident he's seen in years.

The victim's body was taken to Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill. Dental records will be used to confirm the person's identity. It could take about a week to do so.
