Officials said victims reported that con artists claim they are owned money, and then threaten to have the victim arrested by Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler if payment is not received.
Further details about the scam have not been released.
Authorities said if you are a victim of a scam, report it to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM, or you can file a complaint at www.ncdoj.gov.
