Driver accused of hitting cyclist surrenders

DURHAM

Police said Kirk Brown, of Ridge Road in Durham, is charged with felony hit and run with injury.

Investigators said cyclist Steve Saltzman was hit just after 7 a.m. near the intersection of Pickett and Structure House roads Monday.

A doctor who works at Duke stopped to help. Saltzman suffered a concussion and a sprained shoulder.

The cyclist said he was hugging the right side of the road when Brown passed too close, hitting him with his right-side mirror. The mirror broke off, leaving clues to the make of the vehicle at the scene.

ABC11 spoke with Brown as he left the Durham County Jail Tuesday. He said he didn't realize he'd hit anyone and apologized to Saltzman and his family.

He was given a $2,500 unsecured bond.
