One dead, one hurt in Carrboro shooting

ORANGE COUNTY

Officials tell ABC11 they received a call about a break in and possible armed robbery just before 2 a.m. in the 100 block of Wesley Street, just south of downtown.

When officers arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds. One of the victims, later identified as 27-year-old David Lee Goodman of Durham, was declared dead at the scene. The other victim was taken to UNC Hospitals with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities have released few other details surrounding the incident.

However, they did say they are searching for an unidentified man to question him about the incident. At this point they don't believe the public is in danger.

That's reassuring for some residents, but one neighbor told ABC11 that he was not surprised to see police activity down the street from him.

"Murder is a new thing, but gunshots and sort of crime, drug related, alcohol related issues are not new in this area," Luke McKay said.

Despite the crime McKay said he's witnessed in the neighborhood, Friday's shooting is the first homicide in Carrboro since 2008 -- that was an armed intruder, so the incident was ruled justifiable. The last criminal homicide was in 1999.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to call Lt. Cannady at (919) 918-7417 or Chapel Hill/Carrboro CrimeStoppers at (919) 942-7515.
