RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The officer shot during Wednesday's burglary at a Raleigh apartment complex was hit by a fellow officer, police said.

There was a huge police presence at the scene.

Authorities said Officer C.N. Chandler was struck by a round fired by another Raleigh police officer.

Authorities say a single shot sliced through Chandler's bullet-proof vest.

The ongoing investigation also shows the suspect in the case, Chijioke Kennedy Madueke, 28, was armed with a knife during the encounter.

Chandler and two other officers were trying to get Madueke, who was just evicted, out of the apartment.

The other officers involved were identified as Officer R.D. VanHouten and Officer T.A. Duford. Police did not say which officer accidentally shot Chandler.

The landlord called 911 and told the dispatcher, "The sheriff came out and we did the lock out. The tenant broke in . . . He's here with his girlfriend right now."

Madueke has a violent history. He was arrested last year for assault with a deadly weapon.

Cary Police say he was taken into custody after welding a knife during a domestic dispute.

He hasn't been charged yet in this most recent incident.

"I do ask the public to join me in wishing all those involved a speedy recovery and I would echo what we've heard recently in our Community Conversations: as a community we need to support each other in difficult times and not make assumptions or rush to judgment," Raleigh Mayor Nancy MacFarlane said. "We are able to face adversity when we stand together as a community,"

Chandler was treated and released from WakeMed. Madueke is still being treated at WakeMed.

Chandler has been with Raleigh PD since October 2013.

VanHouten joined the force in November 2010 and Duford began in November 2011.

All of the involved officers are assigned to the Field Operations Division in the Southwest District and have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-related shooting.

Madueke is a former Wake Tech student, though he did not receive a degree. He also played on the soccer team in 2009.

Police said the SBI has been called in to investigate, which is standard in any officer-involved shooting.
