A fire at a Smithfield apartment complex forced dozens of residents out of their homes early Wednesday morning.

The blaze broke out at the Auston Manor apartments on 129 South and 3rd Streets. Smoke forced 50 residents to evacuate.

The residents were sent across the street to First Baptist Church for shelter.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents who won't be able to get back to their homes for at least 72-hours.
