Deputies found Gabriel Jacobs inside a wrecked pick-up on NC 86 around midnight Tuesday.
At first, officials thought it was just a crash, but soon realized he had been shot. Jacobs later died.
In November, someone shot and killed his mother Eva during a home invasion.
Deputies charged two people in that case, but a judge let both men go --after a key witness never showed up in court.
Investigators will not say if the mother and son's murders are connected.
