Two Cumberland County deputies discharged

CUMBERLAND COUNTY

The release of the officers is based on circumstances involving a current investigation and the information available to Sheriff Earl Butler.

According to the statement the decision was made after careful consideration and evaluation of the matter pursuant to North Carolina General State Statute 153A-98.

Lt. Neelis Smith and Captain Cuyler LaRue Windham, Jr. were discharged as a result of the failure of the deputies to adhere to the high standards Sheriff Butler expects and requires of all sheriff's office personnel.

These matters, being personnel matters and the subject of a criminal investigation, are such that further comment will not be issued until North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has completed its pending investigation.
