Durham Rescue Mission holds annual Easter event

DURHAM

All you can eat barbecue with all the trimmings! But the food was just the icing on the cake.

The event hosted 1,535 people at the /*Durham Rescue Mission*/'s Annual /*Easter*/ Community Dinner. Four-hundred and seventy-seven volunteers distributed 679 /*Easter baskets*/, 750 free bags of groceries and served 1,125 meals.

People began lining up at 7 a.m. and the event didn't start until noon.

"It breaks my heart to see them line up early, but yet, it's a blessing to know we have the baskets for them," said Ernie Mills, Durham Rescue Mission. "They know if they don't get an Easter basket here today, they won't get one."

The highlight of the event was thousands of Easter baskets filled with toys, stuffed animals and candy.

There were also dozens of games and prizes for children.

This was the Mission's 34th year hosting the event.
