The Fayetteville Police Department is issuing a warning to citizens to avoid leaving portable GPS systems visible in their vehicles when they are unoccupied.

The department originally sent out a warning about thefts on March 11.

Since that time --March 12 through 26-- there have been 46 additional GPS systems reported stolen.

Officials are urging citizens to remove devices from their vehicles or place them out of sight when leaving the vehicle unoccupied even for a short amount of time. Saying, GPS systems are an easy target for thieves.

Thefts have taken place throughout the city, including motel and hotel parking lots, shopping areas and apartment complexes.

Authorities are warning citizens to stay alert and make their vehicles harder targets for criminals.
