Apex police say a Raleigh man was killed early Sunday morning as a result of a high speed crash.

23-year-old Steven William Ward was killed when he lost control of his car, overcorrected, struck a parked car and then hit a utility pole. Ward was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima.

Ward was not wearing his seatbelt. There were two other people in the car; they were treated and released from Wake Medical Center.

The accident happened on Highway 55, just east of the US 1 Highway Bridge, around 1:45 a.m.

Apex Police tell Eyewitness News the preliminary investigation revealed that excessive speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The area where the crash occurred is a 45 mile an hour zone, but authorities believe Ward was travelling in excess of 80 miles an hour.

This was a single vehicle accident; no other charges will be filed.
