5-year-old drowns in pond

HOKE COUNTY

Emergency dispatchers at the sheriff's office received the call a little after 7:15 p.m.

Around 10 p.m., authorities recovered the body of the child from a private pond off Shankle Road.

Several volunteer fire department pump trucks were called in to drain the small pond.

Once drained, they found the body of 5-year-old Jerry Scott.

Investigators say he and a younger sister walked over to the pond. He slid down an embankment into almost 12 feet of water. The younger child then ran into the house to get help.

Deputies say the young boy was visiting at the home after his grandfather's funeral.

"He did not live here, they live over on Turnpike, and they were visiting," Chief Deputy Gary Hammond said. "The father of the victim, his father had passed away and the funeral for that was today, so he lost his father and his son."

Investigators are ruling the drowning accidental.
